Five people were rescued from the water this morning after their dinghy capsized in the entrance to Langstone Harbour.

Solent Coastguard received multiple reports from members of the public reporting people in the water at 8:15am.

The Coastguard Rescue helicopter was scrambled to the scene and the Porstmouth RNLI lifeboats were requested to launch.  Portsmouth Coastguard rescue officers were also in attendance.

Veronica Taylor, Watch Officer, Solent Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said:

“The five casualties’ two girls and three boys all in their early twenties were rescued from the water initially by vessels in the area and transferred to the lifeboats on scene.  The casualties were then taken to Portsmouth lifeboat station where they were met by Coastguard rescue officers who administered first aid.  The casualties did not need further medical treatment.

This stretch of water can be particularly hazardous due to the strong currents flowing out of the harbour with an outgoing tide; the casualties were fortunate that they were rescued so quickly.  We urge members of the public whenever they take to the water to be prepared and to always be wearing their lifejackets.”
